Mark Sheppard and I met through MySpace, as many artists do these days. He first contacted me about purchasing two of my photographs to use as images on his CD’s for The Offering, and then a mutual artistic respect and friendship developed. “The Sound of Art” project was born. Despite the fact that he resides in the UK and I live in the US, we work easily together, & the DVD idea developed when Mark felt inspired to create original, ethereal, electronic music to accompany the two new series of art I've been working on; a mixed media series as well as a group of 35mm B&W photos taken during my travels within the US & Europe. This turned into a collaborative project where we've created a DVD for multiple senses. It can be viewed visually/artistically, listened to musically, or both simultaneously. “The Sound of Art” consists of two parts: “Mystics & Mourners”; mixed media art set to meditative, ethereal music and “Journeys in Black & White”; 35mm B&W photos set to techno-sampled moody music. Each part has it’s own feel and the music was created, mostly electronically, to exemplify the feelings that Mark felt when looking at my artwork. We’re very proud of this, our first but hopefully not last, collaboration and hope it brings multi-sensory enjoyment to others! ~Lauren Curtis LAUREN CURTIS www.LaurenCurtisArt.com forestwalker333@hotmail.com The Artist’s Statement
Art, spirituality and culture are all intertwined. Through my work, I express my beliefs, which have strong roots in the power of the Feminine and Nature, and draw from various mythological and symbolic systems of both ancient and modern cultures. Using artwork, often inspired from my travels within the US & Europe, I tell my personal stories of the world as I experience them, and of myself as an individual in that world. I have a great respect for what makes people different, as well as what makes us similar. Earth-centered religions, from which I draw much inspiration, believe that everything and everyone are connected and contain their own beauty. Art is a perfect medium to portray these ideas. We are all an integral part of nature, in both a macro- & micro-cosmic sense, and the similarities found throughout different countries and cultures seem to prove this. These relationships are an important focus for my work. When creating art I enjoy using diverse materials, and for each piece, I select the media that best exemplifies the symbols & subjects I’ve chosen to work with. Each work of art then becomes it’s own personal myth-story. *****************************************************************************************************
